CNIL imposes a fine on a retail chain for purported spam messages

France's data protection regulator, the Commission nationale de l'informatique et des libertés (CNIL), has imposed a fine of 525,000 euros on the technology retail chain Hubside.Store for allegedly utilizing unsolicited phone calls and text messages to advertise products available in its stores. The CNIL asserts that the retailer acquired personal data of potential customers from data brokers and failed to obtain proper consent to target them with promotional messages.
