Data protection in Brazil: privacy meaning freedom

Ricardo Cavallini, digital specialist in Brazil and professor at Singularity University, defends that it is essential that the protection of personal data is a fundamental right of citizens. The expert points out that the concept of privacy in Brazil has been significantly changed. In an interview with CNN, he declares that “In the connected world, everything is recorded, nothing is anonymous, and there is no choice. Each millisecond, there are people accessing our personal data, our conversations, the places we go, wherever we go. With this, it is important to know who has access to our data. Privacy and data protection mean freedom.” For Cavallini, the concept of personal data is increasingly broader, and goes far beyond names and addresses. Big techs (Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, etc.) have been using our personal data to make a profit through ads. Despite the concept of privacy surpassing the protection of the internet, Cavallini argues that data is gaining much more importance nowadays.
