European Union Fines Meta €251 Million for Data Breach on Facebook

Meta has been fined €251 million by the European Union for a data breach that occurred in 2018, affecting 29 million accounts, including 3 million in the EU and the European Economic Area. A vulnerability in Facebook’s “View As” feature allowed unauthorized access to personal data, including names, contact details, location, and sensitive information. Although Meta quickly addressed the issue, the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) imposed the fine, bringing the company’s total fines for violations of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) to nearly €3 billion. Meta has stated it will appeal the decision.
