Garante forbids Italians’ personal data from being processed by AI chatbot

Luka, Inc., U.S. based company developer of Replika, artificial intelligence chatbot, was forbidden by the Italian data protection authority, the Garante, to process Italians' personal data. Garante mentioned that "the application presents concrete risks for minors, does not respect the principle of transparency and carries out an unlawful processing of personal data". It was given Luka, Inc. 20 days to follow the order with a consequence of facing a fine of up to 20 million euros or 4% of the annual global turnover.
