Germany’s data protection commissioner has called on Apple and Google to remove the AI chatbot DeepSeek from their app stores, citing serious concerns over unlawful transfers of personal data to China. According to regulators, DeepSeekcollects and stores user data — including chat history, uploaded files, IP addresses, and location — on servers in China, where GDPR-equivalent safeguards do not apply.
The move comes amid rising fears that Chinese companies could be compelled to share data with the government under national security laws. Italy’s data watchdog already blocked DeepSeek earlier this year over similar issues. Apple and Google must now decide whether to comply with the German order.
