Portugal registers nearly One Data Breach Per Day in 2023

In 2023, Portugal saw 332 personal data breaches, almost one per day, as reported by the CNPD. A significant case involved the Social Security Institute (ISS), which failed to report a breach where an intern accessed sensitive data for extortion. Data breaches increased across various sectors, particularly in commerce, banking, and healthcare. The CNPD can impose fines for delayed reporting, with penalties totaling €138,000 last year.
