Worldcoin has announced the implementation of a new data protection system in which users' iris codes will be divided into parts and stored on different servers. This approach, called multi-party computing (SMPC), aims to increase data security by ensuring that even if one part is compromised, the complete information cannot be accessed. The company's regional director for Europe, Ricardo Macieira, said that this technique offers a high level of encryption, resistant even to quantum computing.
The changes follow the suspension of Worldcoin's activities in Portugal, due to concerns about the protection of minors' data. In addition, the company now plans to verify users' ages in person before collecting digital iris images and will allow the deletion of these codes. Worldcoin is currently in talks with the National Data Protection Commission (CNPD) to resume operations.
